First Ever Give-Away

 After much hemming and hawing, I've taken the leap and decided to actually make some physical cards.  These are all cards that have appeared in this blog.  They are high quality card stock with both front and back printed. These are closer to Topps Archives type feel than the actual vintage 60s or 70s feel.  But they are NOT cheapo cardstock or paper prints.

I will be selling these for $10 a pack, plus shipping.  I am still working out the details. In the mean time. here is a tease as to what cards are in my first pack:

Now due to an error, I got twice as many of the 1982 Fleer Major League Prospect card of Sandberg and Boggs.  So I'm giving them away to 10 random people who leave a comment. Just leave a comment here, and on Friday I'll pick 10. I'll then contact those 10 for their mailing address.

Round 1 & 2

The only real upset in this round could have been the Astros advancing past the Orioles and Tigers. The big disappointment for me was the early exit of the Negro League Legends.

These cards are base on the MLB Dream Bracket.  Not sure who picked the "all-time players". It is a product of Twitch, Out of the Park and Draft Kings.  I take no responsibility for their choices, good or bad.  The cards themselves are based on a rejected Topps design from the late sixties.

1984 Topps Stadium Statues: 2019 ALDS - Rays vs Astros Edition

This life-size Boggs statue is across from his display in Ted Williams' Hitters' Hall of Fame at Tropicana Field. The statue commemorates his 3000th hit. It happened to be a two run homer in Tampa Bay.  The Bagwell Statue is outside another domed stadium named after orange juice, Minute Maid Park.  These guys are both depicted in possibly the ugliest uniforms in the respective franchises' histories.   

My favorite Houston uni is the Original Colt .45 home uniforms, followed closely by the Tequila Sunrise '70s uni.  The Rays hands-down-best is their 70's faux-back based loosely on the San Diego Padres of that era. There may be some room for discussion on Houston uniforms, but the 70's faux-back is the only correct answer for Tampa Bay.

1982 Fleer Major League Prospects: Ryne Sandberg, Wade Boggs

In 1982 there were 17 player who received Rookie of the Year votes. 11 of the 17 players made it onto cardboard in at least 1 of the 4 major releases, Topps, Topps Traded, Fleer and Donruss. In my last post I put 4 of the remaining 6 onto a multi-player 1982 Donruss Rated Rookie card. For the other two, I created this Fleer Major League Prospects card.

Had this card actually been made in 1982, I probably would have given my eye teeth for it. Ryne Sandberg and Wade Boggs (along with Tony Gwynn) had the most sought after cards of the 1983 Topps set and were dominant at their positions throughout the '80s. Both players were solid hitters in 1981 at the AAA level. Sandberg hit .293 while Boggs hit .335. Sandberg was even a September call up for the Phillies before being traded to the Cubs. 

They both saw action on opening day 1982. Boggs didn't play in the opening game for the Red Sox but started game 2 of an opening day double header. Ryno was an opening day starter for the Cubs. Neither of these players started at the position they were best known for. Boggs played first base in his first big league game. Sandberg spent most of his first season as the Cubs third baseman.

Sandberg and Boggs would eventually enter the Hall of Fame together in 2005. For Sandberg it was his 3rd year of eligibility but Boggs was a 1st ballot Hall of Famer.
