MLB Dream Bracket Alt-Topps Cards Part 6

Tripling up again as the second round is already underway. Today I wont spoil it for you but is you want to check out the current standings click here. Once again, we have three teams with long histories, and two with relatively short histories. We also have a fill-in team to make it an even sixteen teams for the NL bracket.

In the Cardinals-Rockies match up we have Dizzy Dean, Rogers Hornsby, Ozzie Smith and Stan Musial.  Representing the Rockies are Ubaldo Jimenez, Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki and Larry Walker. If you want to see the results of this series click here for the story and video.

For the Under Twenty-Five team we have White Sox Pitcher Lucas Giolito, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. and Dodgers outfielder Juan Soto.  The Phillies have pitcher Robin Roberts, DH Dick Allen and outfielders Richie Ashburn and Chuck Klein.  If you want to see the results of this series click here for the story. Sorry but no video.

In the Pirates - Diamondbacks match up we have Vern Law, Honus Wagner, Bill Mazeroski and the great Roberto Clemente. Another inauspicious beginning. Reed Johnson made his MLB debut on April 17, 2003 as a pinch runner. In the bottom of the 9th, losing 4-0, the 26 year old Blue Jay rookie took over on the base-path for Josh Phelps. Reed was forced out at 2nd.

Down 11-3 in the bottom of the 9th, Juan Uribe got his first at bat versus the Padres on April 8, 2001.  He grounded out to 2nd as the Rockies went down in order.

1962 Topps NL RBI Leaders: Cepeda, F.Robinson, Mays, Aaron

 

 This is one of those cards that if I didn't make it myself, I would have sworn was a real card. I mean how could Topps not include RBI Leaders in their set? This would have been a sought after card for many years. All 4 players are Hall of Famers. At the time this card would have been produced Mays, Cepeda and Robinson had all been elected Rookies of the Year and Aaron, Robinson and Mays had all been recent NL MVPs. Topps must have realized their missed opportunities because by 1964 RBI Leaders would become a staple of every set.

When I looked at the 2011 Heritage set, I saw that Topps was true to their original 1962 set and did not include an RBI Leader card. When I looked into who should have been on this card, I was struck by the similarities. I felt compelled to create a 2011 Heritage Card That Never Was:

Once again 3 of the 4 were recent NL MVP winners and 2 were Rookies of the Year. Are these 4 also destined to be enshrined in Cooperstown?
