Seems to be a theme in the first round to pit teams with long histories with newer teams. This is no exception. The Nationals were born as the Montreal Expos in the 1969 expansion. That same expansion brought the Padres (who almost moved to Washington in 1974).  The Marlins were part of the 1993 expansion along with the Rockies.

In the Reds - Nationals game we have Jim Maloney, Ted Kluszewski, Pete Rose and Joey Votto going for the Reds. The Expos/Nationals have Stephen Strasburg, Gary Carter, Tim Raines and Bryce Harper. If you want to see the results of this series click here for the story and video.

In the Braves - Marlins match up, Warren Spahn is pitching with Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron and Dale Murphy in the field. The Marlins have Dontrelle Willis, Gary Sheffield, Derek Lee and Giancarlo Stanton.  If you want to see the results of this series click here for the story.

The Dodgers -Padres series has Don Newcombe, Cody Bellinger, Jackie Robinson and Steve Garvey for the Dodgers, all of them are former NL MVPs. Tripling up again as the second round is already underway. Today I wont spoil it for you but is you want to check out the current standings click here. Once again, we have three teams with long histories, and two with relatively short histories. We also have a fill-in team to make it an even sixteen teams for the NL bracket.

In the Cardinals-Rockies match up we have Dizzy Dean, Rogers Hornsby, Ozzie Smith and Stan Musial.  Representing the Rockies are Ubaldo Jimenez, Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki and Larry Walker. If you want to see the results of this series click here for the story and video.

For the Under Twenty-Five team we have White Sox Pitcher Lucas Giolito, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. and Dodgers outfielder Juan Soto.  The Phillies have pitcher Robin Roberts, DH Dick Allen and outfielders Richie Ashburn and Chuck Klein.  If you want to see the results of this series click here for the story. Sorry but no video.

In the Pirates - Diamondbacks match up we have Vern Law, Honus Wagner, Bill Mazeroski and the great Roberto Clemente. 1984 Topps Stadium Statues: 2019 NLDS - Nationals vs Dodgers Edition

Needless to say neither of these Hall of Famers played in the ballparks where their statues exist. Walter Johnson played for the American League Washington Senators team that (long after his retirement) moved to Minnesota and be came the Twins.  Jackie Robinson, of course, never moved west when the Dodgers fled Brooklyn.

 The Walter Johnson statue, along with the statues of Josh Gibson and Frank Howard, tries to capture the action.  The artists sculpted multiple arms in motion to depict this.  The Robinson statue also depicts action, with Jackie frozen in his slide into home plate.  Not to be an art critic, but I prefer the Robinson. It's less messy.

One more note about both of these fields.  They both retained the team name. No corporate sponsored names, just Nationals Park and Dodgers Stadium. That is a rarity these days.
