And as is typical for me, it took longer than expected.  But at least it is in time for the NFL Playoffs. This batch of cards span from 1957 to 1977.  Right in the middle of what I consider the golden age of football cards  If you don't want all 13 cards, you can buy them individually on eBay. So, what's in each pack?

The usual 12 Cards That Never Were plus a special insert.

This time the insert card is a 1970 Topps Glossy style Frank Thomas. This card features the White Sox Hall of Famer from his college days.  He was the tight end and teammate of Bo Jackson at Auburn University before he ultimately chose baseball over football.

All cards are professionally printed.

Front and Back.

The backs are formatted in a style consistent with their year.

The front of the cards are high gloss UV coated.

The backs are not.

The backs a full color matte finish.

These are similar in look and feel to the Topps Archives cards. 

Except that mine are made from 18 Pt. card stock.  That makes them thicker, therefore closer in feel to the original cards of that era.

The have all been previously featured on this blog.

The overwhelming majority are from the players' rookie years.

Cleaning Out the Closet 

Here are some cards I found, going through some of my old stuff that never got published on this blog. Some of these, I don't remember where I published them.  Like this Bo Jackson throwing out the first pitch at a White Sox - Royals game.  Apparently he wanted to appear neutral by wearing a plain black cap and sweatshirt.  I added the Sox logos because I am not neutral. But I really don't remember where or when (or if) I posted this card. 

This card was made for Rich Klein of Sports Collectors Daily.  The Astros had the first pick of the 1992 draft.  Hal Newhouser, who was at that time serving as scout for Houston, tried to convince them to draft Jeter. After they picked Phil Nevin instead, Newhouser quit.  This was my attempt at a "What if?" card.

Phillies reliever Al Raffo pitched in 35 games in 1969, but never had a card.  Jim from Downington requested this for his 1970 Topps Baseball blog.

In 1967 there were several of these type of multi-player cards. These cards were an attempt at giving at least one to each team.  I had a hard time finding era appropriate photos and ultimately abandoned the project.

1971 NFL Rookies of the Year

In 1971 there were a total of  5 different Rookie of the year presenters each giving out 2 awards each. Some were divided among offensive and defensive, others AFC or NFC. But for the most Part they were in agreement and the 10 awards were split between 3 players; John Brockington, Jim Plunkett and Isiah Robertson. None of these players had Topps cards in 1971. All three made their Topps debut the following year.

John Brockington won 4 different Rookie of the year honors. He was named NFC ROY by The Sporting News (TSN), United Press International (UPI) and the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA).  He was also named Offensive ROY by the Associated Press (AP). Brockington was the Packers 1st round pick from Ohio State. He was a 3 time Pro Bowler.

Jim Plunkett also collected 4 Rookie of the Year awards. He was the AFC Rookie of the Year per TSN, UPI and NEA. He was crowned Offensive ROY by Pro Football Weekly (PFW). Plunket was the overall #1 pick in the 1971 Draft. He was the 1970 Heisman Award winner for Stanford beating out Joe Theisman and Archie Manning. He led the Raiders to 2 Super Bowl victories despite being the back up quarterback both seasons.  I made this card several years ago for Jim from Downingtown's 1971 Football Cards blog.

Isiah Robertson was named Defensive ROY by both PFW and AP. Robertson was the Rams 1st round pick in 1971 out of Southern University. He was a six time Pro Bowler for the Rams. He was traded to the Bills in 1978 and was among the highest paid linebackers at the time.

1971 Ron Santo

This was one of the toughest cards to convert from football to baseball. First the team font was really tough to duplicate. Another problem was the cartoonish football player in the lower left corner. I replaced it with the cartoon player from the 1964 Topps Baseball checklist. The final problem was the signature Topps included on the 1971 Baseball card. The football cards had no such signature. I considered zooming in to avoid the autograph but it destroyed the look of the card and using a different photo of Santo would defeat the purpose in my mind. So I've resigned myself to leave it in, but wouldn't you know it, the autograph is partially obscured by the cartoon ball player. So this is what we are left with.

1971 Topps Adrian Young - Error Card Corrected

In case you were wondering, Yes! I will do requests. 

Jim from Downingtown suggested that I create a card for Adrian Young that featured his actual photo. The original card featured a photo of Rick Duncan who was a punter on the 1968 team. 

Adrian Young was the captain of the 1967 national champion USC Trojans. He lived in Ireland until he was 10 and ironically had his defining game against the Fighting Irish in 1967 when he tied a conference record with 4 interceptions.

A quick search of the internet resulted in no color pictures of Adrian Young in an Eagles uniform, but Jim provided this great action shot. So I went horizontal on it. Jim also provided the research on who all the other players are pictured in this shot.

"Adrian Young is in the center of the photo, wearing a very un-linebacker-ish #35. He is fighting off a block from Giants' backup TE #87 Rich Kotite (who would later coach the Eagles after the Buddy Ryan years). The Giants' tackle is #77 Dick Hanson (his only season in the league). The running back appears to be wearing #34, which would be Junior Coffey. The other Eagles are #24 safety-turned-cornerback, Nate Ramsey and #83 defensive tackle Don Hultz."

And here is a BONUS CTNW of Rick Duncan on a 1968 Topps card. 1968 was the only season Duncan actually saw action in an Eagles uniform.

2011 Fantasy Football Cards

Football season starts today and that means fantasy football. I know this doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the blog, but it's my blog so I get to do what i want. I made a few cards of the players I drafted on my team, "Uncle John's Band". Even put my logo on a few helmets.
