And as is typical for me, it took longer than expected.  But at least it is in time for the NFL Playoffs. This batch of cards span from 1957 to 1977.  Right in the middle of what I consider the golden age of football cards  If you don't want all 13 cards, you can buy them individually on eBay. So, what's in each pack?

The usual 12 Cards That Never Were plus a special insert.

This time the insert card is a 1970 Topps Glossy style Frank Thomas. This card features the White Sox Hall of Famer from his college days.  He was the tight end and teammate of Bo Jackson at Auburn University before he ultimately chose baseball over football.

All cards are professionally printed.

Front and Back.

The backs are formatted in a style consistent with their year.

The front of the cards are high gloss UV coated.

The backs are not.

The backs a full color matte finish.

These are similar in look and feel to the Topps Archives cards. 

Except that mine are made from 18 Pt. card stock.  That makes them thicker, therefore closer in feel to the original cards of that era.

The have all been previously featured on this blog.

The overwhelming majority are from the players' rookie years.

1965 Philadelphia Bob Hayes

 

Keeping on with a football vibe, here's a rookie Card That Never Was of Bob Hayes.  On this date in 1964 he won a gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics in the men's 100m.

In his rookie season, 1965, he had 1003 receiving yards, led the NFL in TD receptions and was selected to the Pro Bowl.

1965 NFL Rookie of the Year

For the first and only time, both the NFL and AFL Rookies of the Year were future Hall of Famers. In the AFL was a brash young QB out of Alabama named Joe Namath. We've all seen his iconic rookie 1965 Tall-Boy, below. In the NFL was a a quiet running back out of Kansas, Gale Sayers. He wouldn't be seen on cardboard until the 1966 Philadelphia set in which he had 2 cards. He had a regular issue and was featured on an action card in that set.

In 1965 Topps adopted the "Tall-Boy" style for their football cards. This was nearly identical to the 1964-65 Topps hockey cards. The only real difference was that the team name was on the hockey card while the team city was on the football cards.

For their part Philadelphia added the NFL logo to their cards. I took the liberty of changing the league logo to a team logo.
