MLB Dream Bracket Alt-Topps Cards Part 2

Another simulated game featuring the All-Time lineups of the White Sox and the Royals begins today at 10 am Eastern time.  And again I put together 4 cards of each team, One pitcher and three position players. For the Sox I took the knuckler, Wilbur Wood, Minnie Minoso, Luke Appling and Carlton Fisk.  For the Royals I have the side-armed Dan Quisenberry, George Brett, Bo Jackson and Freddie Patek.

The cards themselves a based on an unused Topps prototype, presumably from the late sixties. And more info on the games themselves can be found here,

1984 Topps Stadium Statues: Royals vs A's

A.L. Wildcard Edition

For the first round of the playoffs (Including the one-game Wildcards) I created some cards featuring the various players whose statues grace their respective ball parks. I chose the 30 year old Topps card because the dual frames allows for a shot of the player along with his statue. I also just like the clean, classic design of the 1984 set.

Kauffman Stadium in Kanas City has statues of George Brett, Frank White, Dick Howser and the Kauffmans (Ewing and Murial). They are also making their first post season appearance since 1985. In 1985 White and Brett were still playing, Howser was Managing and the Kauffmans still owned the team.

The Oakland Collusium is without statues so I had to go to Philadelphia to find a member of the A's immortalized in bronze. In 1957 (3 years after the A's left Philadelphia) the statue of Connie Mack first graced a park across the street from Shibe Park which had been  renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1953. When the Phillies moved to Veterans Stadium in 1971, so did the statue. Likewise when Citzen's Bank Park was built in 2004.

1975 Kellogg's George Brett

Kansas City Royals CTNW Favorites #1

The 1975 Kellogg's set was a mere 57 cards deep. For the most part it was comprised of veteran players. George Brett wouldn't be found in cereal boxes until after he had won his first batting title in 1976. So despite finishing 3rd in Rookie of the Year voting in 1974, Brett was not part of the 1975 Kellogg's set. Still, how cool would it be to have a 3D rookie card of a future Hall of Famer? And following the line of thought from my previous post, Brett is the only player to go into the Hall of Fame with a Royals cap on his plaque. He was drafted by the Royals in 1971 and played his entire 21 season MLB career in Kansas City. While the other 4 of my picks can certainly be disputed, there can really be no other player at number one.

1974 Topps Rookie Stars: George Brett, Rick Burleson, Greg Gross, Jim Sundberg

In my last post I pointed out that 5 of the 8 players receiving Rookie of the Year votes were not included in the 1974 Topps set.  I think one of the major contributors to their exclusion was Topps decision to issue "All 660 Cards in One Series!":

Only Bucky Dent had his own card in the 1974 Set:

Bill Madlock & Bake McBride were included on multi-player Rookie Cards:

With the inclusion of the Rookie of the Year card I made of Mike Hargrove, All 8 1974 ROY vote recipients now have a 1974 card.
