Topps had Aaron, Mays and Frank Robinson. Three solid choices and future first-ballot Hall of Famers, all. Two of the three were actually The Sporting News All Star selections for 1961 (Mays and Robinson). Topps was also two for three when it came to starters in the the 1960 All Star Games. Mays and Aaron started both games in 1960. That being said these two Pirates could have been in that set just as easily. Bob Skinner started in left field in both 1960 ASGs. Roberto Clemente was selected to The Sporting News All Star team in 1961.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgooWvuljK-E3PPZI6C12CKTkecXwNuA7MF4Sw2L9EbE4ASOLe_wVMxEgM653BMILl5-BfmBWXwZMKhAAeENeNu9qurAxQ1jUrcNHOIA7lzkm7y95H4F6DxM4jiSJdv_tnFj8T6KnAQjWzbNtA0Wskj_dOuKHft-ROBWeljnlp6XJTM6Yn8eLBFqg=s1050" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgooWvuljK-E3PPZI6C12CKTkecXwNuA7MF4Sw2L9EbE4ASOLe_wVMxEgM653BMILl5-BfmBWXwZMKhAAeENeNu9qurAxQ1jUrcNHOIA7lzkm7y95H4F6DxM4jiSJdv_tnFj8T6KnAQjWzbNtA0Wskj_dOuKHft-ROBWeljnlp6XJTM6Yn8eLBFqg=s320" width="229" /></a></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjuR8HwcnVffFnEiFvZOXjwUmmzi1oSHCsmDR8e-05mHvbQDXsJtx4Oxz1qTeGW9oQbMa3E5l6dhTVbB4G-iXhoFWdMiGjS93jKG7osN2RmHYcReOmUusVb2nW6MozT7Mc9EHXXg5xVSrx1-gga3RTOmQEj_cXa5UkFd1kxl7Cxj7U586e0Q9lTmA=s1050" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjuR8HwcnVffFnEiFvZOXjwUmmzi1oSHCsmDR8e-05mHvbQDXsJtx4Oxz1qTeGW9oQbMa3E5l6dhTVbB4G-iXhoFWdMiGjS93jKG7osN2RmHYcReOmUusVb2nW6MozT7Mc9EHXXg5xVSrx1-gga3RTOmQEj_cXa5UkFd1kxl7Cxj7U586e0Q9lTmA=s320" width="229" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p>Cards That Never Werehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10893879930871693614noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2332216713105600925.post-90914924634338966092022-02-23T12:31:00.002-08:002022-02-23T12:31:28.665-08:00Topps All-Star Misses: 1962 AL Infield<p style="text-align: center;"> In 1962 The Topps "Sporting News All-Star" cards for the AL infield most closely resembled the second ASG of 1961. Topps had three of the four starters from game 2; Norm Cash at first, Luis Aparicio at short, and Brooks Robinson at third. The only player in the 1962 Topps AS set that was an actual "Sporting News All-Star" in 1962 was Brooks. Cash and Robinson were also 1961 Sporting News All Star sections.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjaheHRBfvGDEfCMmO4vYQEF4u62zY6ucQt-89tNiSzPazIQtEmiGnR2R7E9Heh2VtXK70TRTgO3NRfSopZ9NZ6wHz32ky-XYMDQvjIutvp8PKeyX8GOMW6cEx6mvxNiIcRJ58ROAu_IdSXhXGzWWKJ_kyJ1uumixBxq9pn0S9LXrx08vbpwNpRAg=s1050" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjaheHRBfvGDEfCMmO4vYQEF4u62zY6ucQt-89tNiSzPazIQtEmiGnR2R7E9Heh2VtXK70TRTgO3NRfSopZ9NZ6wHz32ky-XYMDQvjIutvp8PKeyX8GOMW6cEx6mvxNiIcRJ58ROAu_IdSXhXGzWWKJ_kyJ1uumixBxq9pn0S9LXrx08vbpwNpRAg=s320" width="229" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">So who could've been on these cards? At first base there could have been a card for Norm Siebern. He was the actual Sporting News All Star selection in 1962. Although he never was an All Star starter he was a four-time All Star from 1962-1964. He al so received AL MVP votes three years running from 1961-1963</div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">At second base there could have been cards for Johnny Temple who and Bobby Richardson. The 1962 Rookie of the Year, Tom Tresh, was the Sporting New All Star selection in 1962. This would be another case where a player could have had a rookie card and an All Star card in the same Topps set. His rookie card appeared in the Series 1. By Series 6 (where the All Stars appeared in 1962) Topps could have made a second card for the eventual ROY.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEis2NuqL7fmMZ-JwGfp0yHUyyWo0tIF808XopQAEeLQxqSyZL-LhE0bCJWG-hywdIKUWVJAILvpeRjNQd14gXpIJJpzuvoICwfSAdKy25mXaXcWvQhnhcGYsyPfwxhcifROZYKxASsYdxFpxD12jDLpdI8qupM5a9-DXh7_MQsoGZRSn4BecusWrA=s1050" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEis2NuqL7fmMZ-JwGfp0yHUyyWo0tIF808XopQAEeLQxqSyZL-LhE0bCJWG-hywdIKUWVJAILvpeRjNQd14gXpIJJpzuvoICwfSAdKy25mXaXcWvQhnhcGYsyPfwxhcifROZYKxASsYdxFpxD12jDLpdI8qupM5a9-DXh7_MQsoGZRSn4BecusWrA=s320" width="229" /></a></div><div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjBD1lRGY4tquCo8zEcxd2FbFW8mekRSzsKgw_pojsIv25mhX7FEnArATO9pnHfLkdemLuFfLYQzM7gMgUaSHGnZvHnWYWTZLKja47IXwXuPlFlknQxOwnucrQLepBmgGCntWScoED4QeWuV9bcqXhDTQDk5lbjJmvrUb38Q3wzWDuAijqAWXGxOg=s1050" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjBD1lRGY4tquCo8zEcxd2FbFW8mekRSzsKgw_pojsIv25mhX7FEnArATO9pnHfLkdemLuFfLYQzM7gMgUaSHGnZvHnWYWTZLKja47IXwXuPlFlknQxOwnucrQLepBmgGCntWScoED4QeWuV9bcqXhDTQDk5lbjJmvrUb38Q3wzWDuAijqAWXGxOg=s1050" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjBD1lRGY4tquCo8zEcxd2FbFW8mekRSzsKgw_pojsIv25mhX7FEnArATO9pnHfLkdemLuFfLYQzM7gMgUaSHGnZvHnWYWTZLKja47IXwXuPlFlknQxOwnucrQLepBmgGCntWScoED4QeWuV9bcqXhDTQDk5lbjJmvrUb38Q3wzWDuAijqAWXGxOg=s320" width="229" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #eeeeee;">Who probably didn't merit inclusion in the 1962 Topps All-Star set, but was in it anyway?</span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #eeeeee;"><b>Chuck Schilling</b></span></p></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhLyMnlC7I6OIWUUTLaukqRRuPo5IoHJ7RhfjI92U4U6TJTkRltVg5nrQPg0EKQTJlT7PoCZyuGkjuot5YKFV6dxpHf81vU0tioQkgIq20qsPY6l3M8uELketzAXIvCeTLYT2QRyREH60aoqlAHl9qupiTF2CxhtivHJio4fqPX7yMijgR7nzTw1w=s655" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="655" data-original-width="466" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhLyMnlC7I6OIWUUTLaukqRRuPo5IoHJ7RhfjI92U4U6TJTkRltVg5nrQPg0EKQTJlT7PoCZyuGkjuot5YKFV6dxpHf81vU0tioQkgIq20qsPY6l3M8uELketzAXIvCeTLYT2QRyREH60aoqlAHl9qupiTF2CxhtivHJio4fqPX7yMijgR7nzTw1w=s320" width="228" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">In 1961 Schilling Tied for 3rd in Rookie of the Year voting. The actual Sporting News All Star selections for 1968 were Bob Gibson and Juan Marichal (both starting pitchers, both right-handed. I don't get this either). Due to military service he only pitched 12 games. Billed as "the next Sandy Koufax" the young Jewish lefty had a great 1967 season despite not pitching enough inning to qualify for any league leader categories. He would not play in an ASG until 1972 after he was traded to Oakland. He didn't get named to The Sporting News All Star roster until 1973.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p></p>Cards That Never Werehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10893879930871693614noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2332216713105600925.post-31965053202932383422022-02-02T11:34:00.001-08:002022-02-02T11:34:24.549-08:00Topps All-Star Misses: 1969 AL Outfield<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjCP60yjdCFEl8kVCvPqo2MLt_odk9Z2F8oD8QOIGG160VYqGCRugr1cRnK-Q25ZedM18gmfoHNMg0h8jXblC1jOSJN6z5GlDp74g3uA4briwxcbBu9_CUdKUOwsy1dcvRiyjhQIgpVmJgs70MAq_Y5uSPlXuwi6FXo1lKblxuA_-rKlQH08vKTKQ=s1050" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjCP60yjdCFEl8kVCvPqo2MLt_odk9Z2F8oD8QOIGG160VYqGCRugr1cRnK-Q25ZedM18gmfoHNMg0h8jXblC1jOSJN6z5GlDp74g3uA4briwxcbBu9_CUdKUOwsy1dcvRiyjhQIgpVmJgs70MAq_Y5uSPlXuwi6FXo1lKblxuA_-rKlQH08vKTKQ=w286-h400" width="286" /></a></div>In 1969 the Topps AL All-Star outfield included Carl Yastrzemski, Tony Oliva and Willie Horton. Of those three, Yaz and Horton were starters in the 1968 All Star Game. None of them were named to the 1969 Sporting News All Star team. Joining Yaz and Horton as a starter in the 1968 outfield was Hondo. Frank Howard was also a 1969 Sporting News All Star selection. This makes his omission even more glaring.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEga0GZyyOO7ZLJUq5zLHFB46bg8SGZMcpZXhlWSxFNRBCSvpXcdu98ifcuKfzK5wnYUxccD-HNzbtApm7rqIAtFaisksHBPDl9lVBO2rQHlHC8CMLNVkSiAadJjhOrgvT-RY4PeXaaZpiFkX9mpB-VSZ0z6yscKSWz_8gU9pExdtVRIFuPt3mwv1Q=s1050" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEga0GZyyOO7ZLJUq5zLHFB46bg8SGZMcpZXhlWSxFNRBCSvpXcdu98ifcuKfzK5wnYUxccD-HNzbtApm7rqIAtFaisksHBPDl9lVBO2rQHlHC8CMLNVkSiAadJjhOrgvT-RY4PeXaaZpiFkX9mpB-VSZ0z6yscKSWz_8gU9pExdtVRIFuPt3mwv1Q=w286-h400" width="286" /></a></div>Joining the "Capitol Punisher" on the 1969 Sporting News Roster was Paul Blair. Despite making his MLB debut in 1967, Jackson didn't have a Topps card until 1969. How cool would it have been if he also had an All Star card that year? He certainly deserved it, as he was also a starter in the 1969 MLB All Star Game.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p style="text-align: center;"><b style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #eeeeee;">Who probably didn't merit inclusion in the 1969 Topps All-Star set, but was in it anyway?</span></b></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #eeeeee;"><b>Tony Oliva</b></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjJUGC4HX4pw4RmkguPNe3CPtjpuBhsiG9h05QzKqk7IJsiRqjbzWMMUPrtHJYNi1TVvxCkFMb6npRK-SHMbwSPVj2AziboDU9TfvDX4WFMmS33C-G4qkHSN3AQHgdlU1kx0D5nv4ltePKZF0hoUsOTmIUVERwAtIWu-L81gtKJVg97sWlf5OZLvg=s748" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="748" data-original-width="531" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjJUGC4HX4pw4RmkguPNe3CPtjpuBhsiG9h05QzKqk7IJsiRqjbzWMMUPrtHJYNi1TVvxCkFMb6npRK-SHMbwSPVj2AziboDU9TfvDX4WFMmS33C-G4qkHSN3AQHgdlU1kx0D5nv4ltePKZF0hoUsOTmIUVERwAtIWu-L81gtKJVg97sWlf5OZLvg=s320" width="227" /></a></div>The newly minted Hall of Famer, Tony Oliva was on the All Star team every year from 1964-1971, but he wasn't a starter in 1968 or 1969. He wasn't selected to The Sporting News in 1968 or 1969 either. A great player with a great list of accomplishments, but he just doesn't belong here.</div><br /><p></p><div><br /></div>Cards That Never Werehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10893879930871693614noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2332216713105600925.post-8808926436584617582022-01-26T09:49:00.001-08:002022-01-26T09:49:07.778-08:00Topps All-Star Misses: 1970 NL Infield<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The 1969 starting NL All Star infield was faithfully represented in Topps 1970 All Star subset. Around the horn they had McCovey at 1st, Felix Millan at 2nd, Santo at 3rd and Kessinger at short. Honestly, not bad for Topps. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">But arguments could be made for the actual 1970 Sporting News All Star; McCovey and Kessinger were also 1970 TSN All Stars at their respective positions. In 1958, Topps created the first All Star series of cards to appear as part of the regular set. In that set, Topps had Bob Friend as the "Sport Magazine '58 All Star Selection". Warren Spahn was the left handed "selection".</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">As it turns out, Spahn was the starting pitcher for the NL in the 1958 ASG and Friend was the first righty to come on in relief. Solid, picks by Topps, specially seeing how this was a late enough series in the 1958 set and they most likely used the power of hindsight. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">But just for the sake of argument, and to be consistent with my own agenda, here is a couple cards that never were based on the 1957 ASG. In 1957 Curt Simmons was the starter and Lew Burdette was the first righty to come on in relief.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cSc8i3TAwhY/YXNN0vehC2I/AAAAAAAAUi0/cZceYtrJTlYfMSqhuLewAFTlz35zcLXeQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1100/1958%2BTopps%2BNL.Lew%2BBurdette.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1100" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cSc8i3TAwhY/YXNN0vehC2I/AAAAAAAAUi0/cZceYtrJTlYfMSqhuLewAFTlz35zcLXeQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1958%2BTopps%2BNL.Lew%2BBurdette.jpg" width="233" /></a></div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QZkEbf2kbqg/YXNN0gGajXI/AAAAAAAAUi8/ulO__sOmxA0dK541bPed3s494i35GfuxgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1100/1958%2BTopps%2BNL.Curt%2BSimmons.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1100" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QZkEbf2kbqg/YXNN0gGajXI/AAAAAAAAUi8/ulO__sOmxA0dK541bPed3s494i35GfuxgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1958%2BTopps%2BNL.Curt%2BSimmons.jpg" width="233" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here is where Topps takes a turn that only Topps could. For their "58 All Star Selection" they chose Ed Bailey, who was the starter in the 1957 game. Del Crandall was the starter in the 1958 ASG. Crandall was also the Sporting News All Star selection for 1958. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JQBjtWbfb5w/YXNN6tIHqkI/AAAAAAAAUjA/ZRXvf7YYG1QIgD6r6d4wRt8ZpSrqKOLHgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1100/1958%2BTopps%2BNL.%2BDel%2BCrandall.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1100" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JQBjtWbfb5w/YXNN6tIHqkI/AAAAAAAAUjA/ZRXvf7YYG1QIgD6r6d4wRt8ZpSrqKOLHgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1958%2BTopps%2BNL.%2BDel%2BCrandall.jpg" width="233" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /> <p></p>Cards That Never Werehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10893879930871693614noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2332216713105600925.post-74602345274302327712021-12-01T09:26:00.000-08:002021-12-01T09:26:19.358-08:00Topps All-Star Misses: 1959 AL Outfield<p style="text-align: center;">In 1959 Topps' AL All Star outfield consisted of Mickey Mantle, Al Kaline and Roy Sievers. Continuing on with my posts of baseball cards using the Topps football card designs, I found something unusual. In 1960 there was no card of that year's eventual MVP. Norm Van Brocklin was in the final year of his Hall of Fame career. He led the Eagle to an NFL Championship that year. So that needed to be rectified first.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6cW_HljfgLI/YY6wTstoGqI/AAAAAAAAUtM/-18dK8XZtGYgAYqaQEnhwWnFduWicAt0wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1050/1960%2BRoger%2BMaris.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6cW_HljfgLI/YY6wTstoGqI/AAAAAAAAUtM/-18dK8XZtGYgAYqaQEnhwWnFduWicAt0wCLcBGAsYHQ/w286-h400/1960%2BRoger%2BMaris.jpg" width="286" /></a></div>Next onto the baseball version. I chose the 1960 AL MVP, Roger Maris for this card. I needed to alter it a bit by using a colorful baseball image instead of the colored football image Topps used on the 1960 card. Ultimately, it reminded me of the 1964 Topps Giant baseball cards except with a colored baseball,<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><p><br /></p>Cards That Never Werehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10893879930871693614noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2332216713105600925.post-57433540581979704202021-11-09T10:26:00.003-08:002021-11-09T10:51:48.559-08:00Roberto or Bob?<p style="text-align: center;"> In my last post I made a 1962 All Star card for Roberto Clemente. I went back and forth on whether to use the name that Topps used for Clemente back in that era or his chosen name of Roberto. I opted for the one that was more historically accurate. This caused some discussion in the comments. Was this a micro-aggression? Was Topps trying to anglicize his name to appeal to a broader audience? Or was this "Just Topps being Topps"? In it the author states that he searched newspapers.com for the year 1956 looking for uses of the name "Bob Clemente". He then searched the same for "Roberto Clemente". "Bob" had 706 hits, "Roberto" had 5,156 hits. While it was not unheard of, Bob was used approximately 12% of the time when referring to Clemente in 1956, the year Topps changed his name to "Bob". I have no data to back this up, but would wager that as Clemente became more famous (ie: the sixties) that 12% usage of "Bob" in the media diminished. By 1970 Topps (with the exception of a couple 1970 insert cards) finally used his given name on the front of their card.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NUi0hzrHJHs/YYq5mJGOASI/AAAAAAAAUsk/h4mBpEtnv7oVNWWzJNO4hLfl0TYYk8lfwCLcBGAsYHQ/s970/1970%2Broberto.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="970" data-original-width="696" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NUi0hzrHJHs/YYq5mJGOASI/AAAAAAAAUsk/h4mBpEtnv7oVNWWzJNO4hLfl0TYYk8lfwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1970%2Broberto.jpg" width="230" /></a></div><span style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;">I recently saw a 1966 Clemente card on twitter drawn by Gummy Arts (<a href="https://twitter.com/gummyarts" target="_blank"><b>@gummyarts</b></a>). There is no real need for card creators to be historically accurate at the cost of simple dignity. If they are offended by something you say, do your best not to offend them. Especially something small like a name. Whether we're talking about "Bob" Clemente, "Richie" Allen, the Washington Redskins or the Cleveland Indians. Most times it costs you nothing. Other times it could be a marketing bonanza. Just think how many new jerseys, t-shirts, hats, etc. the Guardians will sell this year. </div></span></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I have been collecting cards since 1974. By then Clemente was gone, but I had never heard him referred to as "Bob". It was odd when I found older cards that had that name. By 1970 even Topps was calling him Roberto. For me to refer to him as "Bob" in an effort to be historically accurate to what Topps would have done, is counter to what I put at the very top of this blog. "What cards would look like if I had my way". So with my apologies to Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker, here is the card I should have made:</div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B7liHCv54VA/YYq7a0ZGMAI/AAAAAAAAUs0/e8GvEmo7e_o-1qQiCvZL-OTL6spL3ppPwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1050/1962%2BNL%2BRoberto%2BClemente.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B7liHCv54VA/YYq7a0ZGMAI/AAAAAAAAUs0/e8GvEmo7e_o-1qQiCvZL-OTL6spL3ppPwCLcBGAsYHQ/w286-h400/1962%2BNL%2BRoberto%2BClemente.jpg" width="286" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><p style="text-align: center;">I think it looks just as good as my previous "Bob" Clemente card. They had Aaron, Mays and Frank Robinson. The actual outfield in both 1961 games was Mays, Clemente and Cepeda. Now, Topps did have an All Star card of Cepeda at 1st base. In 1962 he did move back to 1st and was the starter at 1st in both '62 games. He was also a 1962 Sporting News All Star selection at 1st base in 1962. So that checks out. Frank Robinson was also a Sporting News All Star in 1961 and 1962. Still good so far. But Where is Clemente? He started all 4 ASGs in 1961 and 1962. He was also a 1961 Sporting News All Star. The other missing Star was Tommy Davis. He was a starter in both 1962 games and was a 1962 Sporting News All Star.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-meWw7-vWzSU/YXNLXSMrZHI/AAAAAAAAUhI/kk3yMvTt6vMp-NOBktf0D63rhUSn4GncgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1050/1962%2BNL%2BTommy%2BDavis.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-meWw7-vWzSU/YXNLXSMrZHI/AAAAAAAAUhI/kk3yMvTt6vMp-NOBktf0D63rhUSn4GncgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1962%2BNL%2BTommy%2BDavis.jpg" width="229" /></a></div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G5_l1hDOL2g/YXNLRvEtQuI/AAAAAAAAUhE/hqD0F-XhgrESjJhe184IMSTXdNxX5S5rQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1050/1962%2BNL%2BBob%2BClemente.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G5_l1hDOL2g/YXNLRvEtQuI/AAAAAAAAUhE/hqD0F-XhgrESjJhe184IMSTXdNxX5S5rQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1962%2BNL%2BBob%2BClemente.jpg" width="229" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #eeeeee;">Who probably didn't merit inclusion in the 1962 Topps All-Star set, but was in it anyway?</span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nwz0XUcEqiQ/YYWEd7pM5fI/AAAAAAAAUpc/EJyUAGqVRassWCr9S8jwbULp3WdNP1GaACLcBGAsYHQ/s657/1962-topps-394-hank-aaron-all-star-30512.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="657" data-original-width="470" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nwz0XUcEqiQ/YYWEd7pM5fI/AAAAAAAAUpc/EJyUAGqVRassWCr9S8jwbULp3WdNP1GaACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1962-topps-394-hank-aaron-all-star-30512.jpg" width="229" /></a></div><p><span style="color: #eeeeee;"><b>Hank Aaron:</b></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">This almost feels blasphemous, but the Hammer probably didn't belong. So here is a custom Brian Piccolo card in the style of the 1964 Topps Ken Hubbs "In Memoriam" card. I was tempted to spell his name wrong (intentionally). In his one and only Topps card his name was spelled "Bryon" on the front and "Bryan" on the back. He was even part of a "4 in 1" card in 1969, also misspelled "Bryon".</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I won't go into his story. It's covered perfectly in the 1973 made-for-tv movie, Brian's Song. If you haven't already viewed, or even if you just haven't seen it in a while, I highly recommend it. Don't waste your time on the ESPN remake.</div><br /><p></p>Cards That Never Werehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10893879930871693614noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2332216713105600925.post-78462562261914271102021-10-30T12:47:00.001-07:002021-11-02T11:30:11.639-07:00Topps All-Star Misses: 1969 NL Battery<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The 1969 Topps NL All Star battery consisted of RHP Bob Gibson, LHP Jerry Koosman and catcher Johnny Bench. I also (kind of) can't fault Topps for Koosman. He only face one batter in the 1968 ASG but it was the final batter. He struck out Yaz and got the save as the NL won 1-0 in the Astrodome. Despite Grote starting the 1968 ASG, Bench was the Sporting News choice for 1969 All Star catcher. Bench was also the 1968 Rookie of the Year and the runner up was Koosman. From 1960 to 1980, Topps has included World Series cards in their sets with notable exceptions of 1966 and 1979. Now 55 years later, I'm making my version of that missing 1966 set. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bk-9oscw3Lc/YW8UY5fAN4I/AAAAAAAAUfM/6uL-vUEeSCQLqL0oWJcTqyvgJ2kT2EZ4ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1050/1966%2BTopps%2BWS2.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bk-9oscw3Lc/YW8UY5fAN4I/AAAAAAAAUfM/6uL-vUEeSCQLqL0oWJcTqyvgJ2kT2EZ4ACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1966%2BTopps%2BWS2.jpg" width="229" /></a></div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-20313Li25fI/YW8UY06yQcI/AAAAAAAAUfQ/Sd0EMkEcTPYePSaGpWAOy7Y8mxhs3jGKACLcBGAsYHQ/s1050/1966%2BTopps%2BWS1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-20313Li25fI/YW8UY06yQcI/AAAAAAAAUfQ/Sd0EMkEcTPYePSaGpWAOy7Y8mxhs3jGKACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1966%2BTopps%2BWS1.jpg" width="229" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;">Game one the Dodgers were without their ace, Sandy Koufax who was observing Yom Kippur. Reggie and "The Judge" shared the outfield with Frank Howard as starter in the 1969 All Star game. Howard started the 1970 ASG as well. Hondo was also named to the 1970 Sporting News All Star team. This was a project that was begun by the late Bob Lemke. Since my last update of this list, <span style="text-align: left;">Eddie Robinson passed away at the ripe old age of 100. He was the oldest living MLB player at the time of his death. In August we lost Johnny Groth. He was 95. Cloyd Boyer, the older brother of Clete and Ken Boyer, left us in September at the age of 94.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;">That brings the survivors of the 1952 Topps set down to twelve. Moose Skowron was at first, Nellie Fox at second, Luis Aparicio at short and Frank Malzone at third. Unfortunately, the only year when that was the actual MLB starting All Star infield was in 1958. For that reason, I'm give Topps a pass here, even though the only 1957 MLB starter was Nellie Fox. He was also the lone Sporting News All Star selection for 1958. The remaining 1957 starting All Stars were Vic Wertz at first, George Kell at third and Harvey Kuenn at short. So here are their 1958 All Star Cards That Never Were:</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KDmhq86vBEw/YUt1dvLKucI/AAAAAAAAUXo/cLYKsR3K_a09W7n9lvOdER4pZ7z9QlDsACLcBGAsYHQ/s1050/1958%2BTopps%2BAL%2BGeorge%2BKell.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KDmhq86vBEw/YUt1dvLKucI/AAAAAAAAUXo/cLYKsR3K_a09W7n9lvOdER4pZ7z9QlDsACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1958%2BTopps%2BAL%2BGeorge%2BKell.jpg" width="229" /></a></div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ptYN4GyNqdg/YUt1Zb8SpLI/AAAAAAAAUXk/hhIGOX97c_s8LDoVKMk3hCyO7az8LRRmQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1050/1958%2BTopps%2BAL%2BVic%2BWertz.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ptYN4GyNqdg/YUt1Zb8SpLI/AAAAAAAAUXk/hhIGOX97c_s8LDoVKMk3hCyO7az8LRRmQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1958%2BTopps%2BAL%2BVic%2BWertz.jpg" width="229" /></a></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LEBjOm1vKJQ/YUt1iv5kiUI/AAAAAAAAUXs/9yscKz-Xsjsj65ThEON0jbQMpzqWkGrfQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1050/1958%2BTopps%2BAL%2BHarvey%2BKuenn.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LEBjOm1vKJQ/YUt1iv5kiUI/AAAAAAAAUXs/9yscKz-Xsjsj65ThEON0jbQMpzqWkGrfQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1958%2BTopps%2BAL%2BHarvey%2BKuenn.jpg" width="229" /></a></div><br />Cards That Never Werehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10893879930871693614noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2332216713105600925.post-2757199176434219922021-10-10T08:26:00.001-07:002021-10-10T08:26:42.800-07:001977 NFL Rookies of the Year<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Remarkably, all 5 NFL Rookie of the Year presenters were in agreement for the second year in a row. I am making binder covers for them so that they look nice on my shelf. And of course, I decided that all of the cards featured on these binders would be "Cards That Never Were". I've made literally thousands of cards for this blog in the decade plus that I've been sporadically posting. However, football cards have been few and far between. So now I am making a few cards simply for the sake of my binders, and here is the completed binder cover:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QPEOdWVHgcg/YWBpqm7v6_I/AAAAAAAAUb4/0azevLal1gkwIqnYlZkJdus1Qetse_VGwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/9%2Bcard%2Btemplate.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1578" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QPEOdWVHgcg/YWBpqm7v6_I/AAAAAAAAUb4/0azevLal1gkwIqnYlZkJdus1Qetse_VGwCLcBGAsYHQ/w494-h640/9%2Bcard%2Btemplate.jpg" width="494" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">Most of these have been published on this blog. Bartkowski and Brazile were both Rookies of the Year in 1975. Click Here. The Divisional Playoff cards were just published yesterday. Click Here. I took the Vikings-Cardinals card for my binder. And Joe Namath on his potential WFL Chicago Winds card was posted a few weeks back. Click Here.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ATnrKI36khU/YWBictR19oI/AAAAAAAAUbg/bpsZiT0hjiIm5QI5ZG9qcxZgAMDHy1JYQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1090/1975%2BBears%2BRookie%2BStars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="790" data-original-width="1090" height="290" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ATnrKI36khU/YWBictR19oI/AAAAAAAAUbg/bpsZiT0hjiIm5QI5ZG9qcxZgAMDHy1JYQCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h290/1975%2BBears%2BRookie%2BStars.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I am a "homer" and I readily admit it. So you knew I needed to have a bears card. The Rookie Stars card was a Topps baseball standard of the 60s and 70s, but not football. So here's what a 1975 Bears Rookie Stars card would look like with the classic backfield tandem of Walter Payton and Roland Harper.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5C8aMbuWWcg/YWBsmBUdpVI/AAAAAAAAUcU/tdVsMcR6sHgAbRxkZzsm0OvjqlUg-cJfwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1050/1975%2BHIGHLIGHTS%2BBOOZER.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1050" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5C8aMbuWWcg/YWBsmBUdpVI/AAAAAAAAUcU/tdVsMcR6sHgAbRxkZzsm0OvjqlUg-cJfwCLcBGAsYHQ/w286-h400/1975%2BHIGHLIGHTS%2BBOOZER.jpg" width="286" /></a></div>The final two include a "normal" card of George Blanda and a 1974 "Highlights" card of Emerson Boozer. In 1974 the NFL added a sudden death overtime to the rules, and the first player to score a walk-off touchdown was Enerson Boozer. It was a short path from Joe Namath.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h82mi0Lgf58/YWBsr1YBPyI/AAAAAAAAUcY/dur3i3_9VKYqcSU0HLb6r72xbXTpEppOACLcBGAsYHQ/s1080/1975%2Bblanda.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="780" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h82mi0Lgf58/YWBsr1YBPyI/AAAAAAAAUcY/dur3i3_9VKYqcSU0HLb6r72xbXTpEppOACLcBGAsYHQ/w289-h400/1975%2Bblanda.jpg" width="289" /></a></div> In 1975 Blanda had 2 "special" cards. He wanted more complete NFL playoff cards from Topps. I needed to add a few custom football cards to my binder cover anyway (more on that later). Anyway, here are the divisional playoff from 1974 using a similar format of the 1974 AFC and NFC championship cards in the 1975 set.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Acmgo-4OFzo/YViiIVnhP9I/AAAAAAAAUZ0/0uti6sQC1OM5d5pVgwUrMddX9CoYC-lmgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1080/1975%2BPlayoff%2Bbuf%2Bpit.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="780" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Acmgo-4OFzo/YViiIVnhP9I/AAAAAAAAUZ0/0uti6sQC1OM5d5pVgwUrMddX9CoYC-lmgCLcBGAsYHQ/w289-h400/1975%2BPlayoff%2Bbuf%2Bpit.jpg" width="289" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Trailing Buffalo 7-3 to start the 2nd quarter, the Steelers scored 26 unanswered points.
